ACAO: the story

ACAO: the story

The history of the Adele Orsi Aero Club.

The act of establishment of the C.S.V.V.A., Centro Studi del Volo a Vela Alpine, an entity with legal purposes of interprovincial character, federated to the Aero Club of Italy, is dated July 1960.
Two years later the A.V.A.L. (Aero club Volovelistico Alta Lombardia) was formed. Then was born what is now the largest national gliding club, which started with an initial core of a dozen members and now has over 230 pilot members and a patent school that trains twenty to thirty pilots each year.
On October 24, 1998, AVAL became A.C.A.O., an acronym that stands for: Aero Club Adele Orsi in honor of the champion from Varese, Adele Orsi, born Mazzucchelli (1928-1998).
To her gliding (not only in Varese) owes not only its affirmation and development, which have enabled it to provide the national sport with champions and victories, but also a series of prestigious awards and personal achievements in both the national and international arena.

The Calcinate airstrip was thus the place, a starting and reference point, around which Varese gliding could finally develop its vocation to increasingly important enterprises, even on a competitive level. The inauguration of the airport took place on March 25, 1962: the name chosen for the airport was that of the man who had designed and built it, engineer Paolo Contri who died on December 9, 1961.
Several champions grew up in Calcinate. Among the many, alongside Adele Orsi, record holders Walter Vergani, Roberto Monti, Attilio Pronzati, Vittorio Colombo, Corrado Costa, and Luciano Avanzini in turn held important titles.

The Calcinate field, admired by gliders from all over the world, is considered one of the most beautiful fields in Europe because of the beauty of the landscape in which it is set, placed as it is between the hills and the lake and with the Campo dei Fiori in the background.
The location is lovely, in the heart of the lake region, within sight of the Alps. It can be reached from Milan by highway and expressway, a 30-minute drive. It is an environment of friends. Dynamism, sporty atmosphere, all nice people.
There is a cordial club life. For you, your family, the children. Club-house, restaurant, bar, billiards pool, campground, the lake just a step away. Come, we are waiting for you…
