Results Varese City Cup 2022 and Promotion Race

During May 8-14, 2022, A.C.A.O. organized in Calcinate the Varese City Cup (CCV), a mixed handicap class competition, and the Italian 20-meter Class Championship, the ranking of which is drawn from the CCV. During the two opening and closing weekends of the competition (May 6-7-8-13-14-15), the Promotion Race took place, aimed at transitioning riders to the national category.
The week was characterized by abnormally hot weather for the season, with peaks of up to 30 degrees, and unexciting weather conditions when compared to the month of May in past years. The assigned themes have always concerned the Foothills area, ranging between Turin and Lake Iseo, and the pilots unfortunately have never had the opportunity to measure themselves against the high mountain terrain. Despite this, the CCV, which had as many as 20 participants from 6 different Aeroclubs this year, flew every day and the top finishers accrued nearly 5,000 points, demonstrating the high sporting value of the competition.
The Varese City Cup was won by the Dutch pilot pair Van Houweninge & Borgmann on Arcus M, followed by Aldo Pigni, second on Ventus 3, and in third by Ugo Pavesi on ASG29E. Deserving a mention is our young Member Alessandro Bassalti, who finished ninth overall and was able to win a day.
The 20-meter Italian Championship was won by Alberto Sironi (with co-pilot Andrea Venturini), who flew Arcus T and confirmed himself as champion in this class he had already won last year at Turin Aeritalia. He is followed by a handful of points by Yuri Prodorutti on Arcus M (with Sandro Montemaggi), a Serristori driver; third place for Stefano Ghiorzo (with Roberta Passardi), also on Arcus M.
The Promotion Race, after a first weekend of bad weather, was decided over the last three days: the winner was Enrico Nicoli on Ventus 2cxa, followed a few points behind the leader in the standings Tommaso Guggiari on LS6 and Adolfo Pomi on Mini-Lak, both of whom were promoted to the national category anyway. Fourth place for AVL’s Luca Leone, who after dominating the standings in the first days of competition, thwarted the good work done so far with an airspace infraction on the last day of competition.
The event succeeded perfectly thanks to the excellent work done by the entire A.C.A.O. team: race director Aldo Cernezzi, scorer Francois, Director Alberto Balducci who perfectly coordinated operations throughout the race, President Margot who ensured impeccable organization, Clara Bartolini who took care of the communication and social part, the mechanics, the secretariat and all the trainers. Thanks also to all the Members for the patience shown in the face of the inevitable increase in traffic due to the race, undoubtedly these events entail minor inconveniences for the drivers but at the same time they play a vital role in the economic livelihood and prestige of our Club.
Finally, thanks to Carlsberg who sponsored us with fantastic beers enjoyed daily by all competitors.
We look forward to such a large participation again next year, trusting in better flying conditions!
